Hughie Hancox is probably the best known restorer of classic Meriden twins of the
50's & 60's, and as an ex Triumph employee, who better to turn your old neglected
heap into a gleaming example of Meriden's finest. He is also the vice-president of
the Triumph Owners Motorcycle Club of Great Britain and an accomplished international
concours judge. This came about because his restored machines, owned by his customers,
won so many awards at the Classic Bike Show (the premier classic show in the UK),
that he was asked to stand down and give others a chance. It was then that the organisers
appointed him a Judge!

About the videos: Hughie, his son in law John & an old friend who was involved in
the video production industry went into partnership a few years back to produce a
video that would help owners of Triumph pre - unit 650 twins to undertake major engine
overhaul themselves. The video was not designed to replace the printed service /
repair manual, rather it was to demonstrate the methods and techniques used in an
engine rebuild that were not easily shown either with still photographs or the written
word. The manual was still required for the essential specifications etc. This was
a colossal undertaking, nearly 50 hours of original "footage" was produced on professional
broadcast quality videotape and reduced in editing to just under 3 hours. Entitled
The Triumph Way the video enabled Hughie to demonstrate the "tricks of the trade"
that he learned at Meriden and which can make a job so much simpler than it looks.
Any Triumph enthusiast, with a modicum of mechanical aptitude can undertake a complete
engine overhaul with the aid of "The Triumph way". This was followed by two more
videos, the Unit 650 Rebuild covers the rebuilding of the Unit 650 engine, transmission
and gearbox. Again running at about 3 hours this video will enable owners of the
Unit 650 Triumph to undertake a major rebuild in their own workshop. The third video
Classic Motorcycle Carburation is shorter at 40 mins and covers the setting up of
the carburation. This video is rather different in that it can be applied to most
post war 4stroke Singles and Twins from the major British manufacturers. The programme
assumes that the machine is in standard unmodified form and is equipped with the
correct carburettor, needle/s, slide/s etc. for the particular model concerned. It's
a Triumph was produced for the Triumph factory in the 1950's and was used by Triumph
dealers around the world to show to potential customers exactly what went into building
a Triumph motorcycle. Running for approximately 30 minutes the video shows many of
the production processes and includes some shots of Edward Turner himself in his
office. Originally shot on black & white 16mm film and produced in the style of the
time, this is a fascinating insight into a bygone era. Tales of Triumph and the Meriden
Factory [BOOK]. In his book Hughie tells the story of his life at the famous Meriden
factory and of his adventures with Triumph motorcycles and Triumph people. By doing
so, he has recorded the fascinating inside story of one of Britain's greatest motorcycle
marques. Now in its third reprint the book has nearly 150 pages and is comprehensively
illustrated with photographs from the period. It covers the period through the fifties
and up to the final collapse of the company in the seventies.
